Handheld devices are driving a revolutionary change in our information society. These devices are getting smaller, more powerful, and also run more applications . However, the fact that these devices use different communication technologies (e.g., Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11) and equipped with different software/ hardwar e processing capabilities adds a number of characteristics, complexities, and de sign constrains to Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET). This multi-level heterogeneit y poses a serious challenge on the performance of MANET. In spite of the fact that MANETs and their related issues have been the focus of recent and ongoing resea rch, coexistence and interoperability between heterogeneous mobile devices have got a little attention but none proposed a complete and comprehensive model. In this thesis, we design and develop a communication abstract model that suppor ts interoperability between heterogeneous mobile devices. The proposed model was represented through a three-layered paradigm: a communication service layer tha t deals with available communication capabilities (e.g., Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11, etc.); a communication capability layer that is responsible for con trolling and managing the lower communication service layer and translating the high level functions of the available capabilities; and finally a communication interface layer that provides the applications with a unified public interface that suppor ts various functionalities. Simulation results show that the proposed model, whe n used in a heterogeneous MANET environment, increases the performance of MANET in term of reliability and power saving, and yields a significant reduction in path length and delay.
